Squad system: keywords and followers

Updated · Mechanics

Quick answer

Every champion, weapon and some items carry KEYWORDS. When you acquire a weapon your keywords don't allow, an ally who can use it joins you as a follower and fires it on your behalf. Followers can't take damage or collect items — they're extra area of effect with no risk. Several can squad up at once. Auroch's showcased combos: Bastian Carthalos + Lorai (fog pulls enemies into his close-range zones) and the Castellan + Trooper Kozlowski (each Shock Trooper the Lasgun adds raises the Castellan's damage).

How it works (official, Oct 21)

A champion fighting with several followers at his side against Skaven

  1. Champions and weapons have keywords. Marneus Calgar’s Gauntlets of Ultramar and Gotrek’s Zangrom-Thaz are examples of owner-locked weapons.
  2. Acquire a weapon your keywords don’t allow → a follower who can use it appears.
  3. Followers attack, can’t be hurt, can’t pick things up. They extend your area of effect.
  4. Multiple followers can squad up.

FAQ

How do I get two followers?

Pick up (or evolve into) two weapons your champion's keywords don't allow. Auroch says multiple followers can squad up.

Can followers die?

No. They can't take damage, and they can't collect items either.

Do followers level their weapons?

Their weapons are in your build, so yes — the Oct 21 post describes Kozlowski's upgraded Lasgun adding more Shock Troopers.
